Design and Hardware
With any smartphone, the design is an essential part. Be it the first impression or how it takes the test of time, a good designed phone is key for many consumers. In this regard, the Xiaomi Redmi 4X falls into the standard brick design abyss. From a distance, it would be very hard to differentiate between a Redmi 4X and similar priced phone as they all come with the curved design and camera on extreme one side. However, the Nokia seems to have established something quite unique. Yes, uniqueness doesn’t equate to a beautifully crafted phone but in the Nokia’s case, it seamlessly does both. The central condensed camera and flash module give the Nokia 3 a very distinct style.
Front side is pretty standard on both. There are touch buttons placed on the bottom and standard array of sensors placed on the top. The Nokia 3 includes a Nokia logo on the top-right which adds a nice touch and doesn’t interfere with usage.
Getting to the hardware, the Redmi 4X instantly wows consumers by providing a fingerprint sensor at this price point. The Nokia misses on this feature and it is the headline thing when comparing both of these phones in terms of hardware. Further, the Xiaomi Redmi 4X packs a faster processor, greater RAM and storage. Clearly, the Redmi 4X provides more value in terms of raw power and hardware.
The Camera modules on both phones have a considerable gap. The Xiaomi Redmi 4X has a 13MP primary sensor with f/2.0 aperture whereas the Nokia has a 8MP sensor with similar aperture. The extra MP provide greater sharpness. Further, the Xiaomi Redmi 4X has a faster camera with decent output.
On the front side, you find a 5MP sensor with f/2.2 aperture on the Xiaomi Redmi 4X whereas the Nokia 3 has managed to fit an 8MP f/2.0 camera. The differences are marginally better on the Nokia but the Redmi isn’t that much lacking in this regard.
Connectivity, Memory and Battery
Both phones have similar connectivity options but in the Memory department, the Redmi 4X has better storage and RAM. Further, the battery is rated at 4,100mAh compared to the 2,630mAh on the Nokia 3. The Redmi 4X lasts quite a bit longer and has higher endurance when put with the Nokia 3.
Till now, Xiaomi has outshined Nokia in all the hardware department but what Nokia offers on the software side, is seldom replicated. Nokia 3 is running the latest Android 7.1.1 Nougat software at the time of writing whereas the Xiaomi is still on Marshmallow. Further, the Nokia 3 is promised to get updated to Android 8.0 Oreo quite soon. If that didn’t tip it in Nokia’s case, the Nokia 3 smartphone has the cleanest User Interface found on any non-Google smartphone. The Android OS is unaltered and without bloat.
To Xiaomi’s defense, MIUI is pretty amazing in its own right but when compared with the Nokia, the Nokia 3 is on par with the Redmi 4X in speed and performance despite the considerable hardware difference. Also, HMD Global has provided some of the best software support by any Android brand. It has released updates each month often before Google which speaks a lot for them.
Overall, the Nokia 3 is the best value for money if you are looking for a phone that has the best software experience, regular Android updates. And is the most secure phone in this price range. Nokia 3 is scheduled to receive Android Oreo update later this year.
On the other hand, Redmi 4X is a great phone on paper with better hardware specs but lacks the usual Android features because of MIUI. And it currently runs on Marshmallow, with Nougat expected in the coming months.
