Nokia 5 and Nokia 8 users are now receiving the January 2018 Google security patch, just a couple of days after the Nokia 3 received it. This update is now rolling out over-the-air and you will be prompted to install it in the coming days. January 2018 update is primarily a bug fix update for the Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities. Nothing new has been added, just the Android security patch.
HMD Global seems to be hard at work with regular Android updates and the upcoming big Android Oreo release for the Nokia phones. For those asking, this latest update for Nokia 5 is for users running Android Nougat. For those on the Oreo Beta, the latest January 2018 patch has already been rolled out in a release.
As per Google, this has changed in the January 2018 Google security update:
Note: CVE-2017-5715, CVE-2017-5753, and CVE-2017-5754, a set of vulnerabilities related to speculative execution in processors, have been publicly disclosed. Android is unaware of any successful reproduction of these vulnerabilities that would allow unauthorized information disclosure on any ARM-based Android device.
To provide additional protection, the update for CVE-2017-13218 included in this bulletin reduces access to high-precision timers, which helps limits side channel attacks (such as CVE-2017-5715, CVE-2017-5753, and CVE-2017-5754) of all known variants of ARM processors.
